Christopher UCSFSept. 2006 – At 3 months of age, Christopher is diagnosed with Bilary Atresia and has Kasai procedure performed in which they connect his small intestines to his liver to act as a drainage of the bile fluid in the liver.

Sept. 2006 – Christopher is admitted to UC San Francisco for cholangitis, an infection and unfortunate complication due to his surgery.

Oct. 2006 – Christopher is admitted to UC San Francisco for reasons unknown – could have been cholangitis.

Nov. 2006 – Christopher is admitted to UC San Francisco for an infection in the blood.

Jan. 2007 – Christopher is admitted to UC San Francisco to teach us how to place his NG tube, a tube that goes through the nose directly to the stomach in the effort of supplementing his feedings at night.

Christopher NGMar. 2007 - Christopher is evaluated for liver transplantation at UC San Francisco. It is an all-day event which includes drawing 8 vials of blood, an x-ray, ultrasound, a echocardiogram, meeting with surgeons, anestesiologist, social worker, nutritionist, and liver doctor.

April 2007 – Christopher is put on the liver transplant waiting list. To qualify as a candidate, a score is given with the sickest patients being at 40 points. Christopher is -2 points meaning he may wait longer for a cadaveric liver; a living donor liver is a more immediate option.

May 2007 – Jason and I decide that he will be the first person to be “worked up” as a living donor. He will donate a piece of his liver which will regenerate soon thereafter.

June 2007 – With the help of the NG tube, Chris is 18 pounds. He will keep the NG tube until transplant to get him bulked up and ready for surgery.July 2007 – Chris’ weight goes up to 18 pounds, 6 oz. but it drops mid-July to 17 pounds, 12 oz.

July 2007 – Chris’ weight goes up to 18 pounds, 6 oz. but it drops mid-July to 17 pounds, 12 oz.

Aug. 2007 – Tentative living-donor transplant date if not sooner.

Aug 2007 – After a setback of losing weight, Chris is now 18 pounds, 10 oz.

Sept 2007 – Jason’s appt for the first part of the donor work-up process.

Sept 2007 – Jenille is cleared to be Christopher’s donor

October 30, 2007 – Christopher is transplanted.  He receives a cadaveric liver.

December 1, 2007 – After 5 weeks at the hospital, Christopher goes home.  He has about 15 post-transplant medications to take and twice weekly lab draws.
